Thanks to the support from our backers SketchChair has been successfully funded through Kickstarter! We are now working with our collaborators to release SketchChair as a free and open-source system.

System

SketchChair will be a free, open-source software tool that allows anyone to easily design and build their own digitally fabricated furniture.

Digital manufacturing processes open up a world of opportunity for producing unique individualised objects, but we think there is a lack of accessible digital tools that allow anybody to use these processes to design and make their own functional, personalised products. We hope that SketchChair will give anybody the opportunity to design a unique one-off original chair that is personal to them.

Within the program, users will be able to upload chairs they have created, adding them to a library of designs here at SketchChair.cc. Any of these chairs will then be freely available to be downloaded and edited by anybody, allowing chair designs to evolve as users continually refine and modify them. In this way we hope that SketchChair will be like an open-source Ikea store, filled with customisable products!

SketchChair Designs

Here are a number of the designs that we have sent to our kickstarter backers, both full size chairs and scale miniatures.

Antler Chair

The Antler chair is our flagship SketchChair design. This design has travelled with us to a number of workshops, conferences and exhibitions. Perfect as a casual sitting room chair or side chair, it is lightweight and sturdy.

Rocking Stool

Co-designed with Nadeem Haidary and Defne Civelekoglu, the rocking stool is a fun and dynamic SketchChair that shows some more design features of the system. It is a simple and sturdy stool that lives comfortably in your living room.

Edge Chair

With its stiched line in profile, the Edge Chair is made up of simple planes. A sturdy and elegant collection of finger-joints.

Stroke Chair

The Stroke Chair is a quintessential SketchChair, little more than a single stroke.

Twiggy and Rocksteady

A pair of children's chairs showing the more illustrative side of SketchChairs. A playful combination of slats and slices, with an added rocking stool if Rocksteady is on his back.

Tote Lounger

Also co-designed with Nadeem, the Tote Lounger is a simple rocker that provides a home for some stray things, in turn using them for ballast whilst in motion.
